Kozo Ito, born in Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture in 1932, is a world-renowned ceramic artist who resides in Kasama, Ibaraki Prefecture. He still works at the Ito studio, founded in 1972, with his son Tomoka Ito.
He is famous for his unique ceramic modeling works that incorporate natural phenomena, such as the shrinkage of dry soil and the study of the crystallization of frozen earths.
As in the vase held at the Musée de Sèvres, it is this frozen engobe technique that is used in the vase we are presenting. This exploration of such an innovative technique has strengthened his position as a pioneer in ceramic art. His international fame began at a young age, with notable exhibitions at the India Triennale in 1978, where he won a gold medal, and the Venice Biennale in 1984. These early successes established his reputation as a contemporary artist on the world stage.
Throughout his career, Ito has made significant contributions to both the art world and the academy. From 1990 to 1999, he taught at Joshibi University of Art and Design. Later, he was a professor at the Kanazawa College of Arts and Crafts from 2002 to 2009.
Kozo Ito has participated in a large number of exhibitions around the world.
In 2009, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, dedicated a major retrospective exhibition to him.
