Furniture Port, crystal chandeliers
Beautiful Louis XV chest of drawers with pronounced curves, crossbow front and flared sides, inlaid with rosewood and opening to five drawers in three rows separated by a brass fluting.
Rich ornamentation of chased and gilded bronzes with a crowned C and top of royal red Flanders marble molded with a period corbin beak, locks also original.
Stamped G SCHWINGKENS, Parisian work of the mid-18th century.
Very good condition, with minor restorations, stamped varnish.
Conceived under Louis XV as a tax mark, the crowned C also became for collectors a quality and date mark used between 1745 and 1749, and seems to have been struck only on the most refined bronzes.
Gustave SCHWINGKENS ( -1760), a cabinetmaker of German origin, arrived in Paris during the Regency, obtaining his master's degree probably at the beginning of the reign of Louis XV. Established on rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine and then rue de Charonne around 1745, he produced chests of drawers and corner cabinets with simple, classical lines.
