"Venice, the Basin of St. Mark"
Oil on canvas
Signed E.M. - dated 1875
Canvas 70 x 56
Frame 86 x 73
The magnificent frontal view of the famous palaces and monuments overlooking the waters of the Basin of St. Mark.
It is the most spectacular and certainly the most iconic image of the City.
Venice is depicted in all its unsurpassed and surreal beauty, a dream destination for all travellers.
The Molo del Bacino is full of boats and typical characters of the Serenissima, and in the sequence of famous buildings, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana, the Campanile and Piazza San Marco with the Basilica, the Columns of St. Mark and San Todaro stand out in order, and on the Riva degli Schiavoni the imposing Palazzo Ducale with the Palazzo delle Prigioni next to it, ending with the buildings that now house the fabulous Hotel Danieli.
It is the extraordinary context described in the most important works of the great Venetian masters of the 18th century, among which Canaletto and Francesco Guardi are the main creators. It is precisely by referring to the very fine pictorial technique of the latter that the master creates this excellent composition dated 1875 and signed with the initials E.M.
It is evident, in the hand of the Author, in addition to a notable miniaturist ability, an excellent predisposition for architectural compositions with the rendering of a masterly volumetric effect, without forgetting to create on the canvas that fantastic atmosphere that characterizes Venice and its uniqueness.
It should be emphasized the exceptional pictorial level achieved in the depiction of the multitude of characters crowding on the shore of the lagoon waters crossed by typical Venetian boats.
The painting is in very good condition still on the first canvas, complete with a beautiful contemporary frame finely decorated and gilded.
