Offered by Frédéric Brossy
Pair of Louis XV period “fauteuils à la reine” stamped Claude-Louis Burgat, in molded, carved and lacquered beechwood.
Very good condition.
Claude-Louis Burgat (1717-1782) was a Parisian carpenter who received his master's degree in 1744 and devoted himself to the manufacture of wooden seats.
Established first on rue de Cléry, then rue Feydeau, he left a widow at his death, who fell into poverty and obtained a grant from King Louis XVI in 1791.
Burgat's work during the reign of Louis XV was distinguished by elegant, well-balanced furniture with supple forms of great finesse, making him a major craftsman of the 18th century.
Seats made by Burgat are in state collections, as well as in the Royal Furniture of Sweden at Stockholm Palace.
Burgat's stamp can be found on a chaise longue that doubles as a daybed, now in the Musée Carnavalet.
