A gold and enamel pendant decorated with the Virgin and Child with Saints.
Sicilian, second half of the 17th century.
Measures 5.6 x 4.1cm (excluding loose bail).
Weighs 24.1 grams.
Complete with a fine, green shagreen case which dates to the 18th century.
The high carat gold pendant is decorated to one side with a vase abundant with flowers before a mountainous landscape, amidst the flowers are four roundels containing the images of Saints Anthony of Padua, John the Baptist and Saint Dominic de Guzmán. The other side of the pendant is decorated with another vase before a landscape, from which protrudes a rose garland, the garland supports an image of the Virgin and Child in Majesty, amidst clouds and angels.
The pendant is decorated in the manner of Giuseppe Bruno who was an enameler from Messina, Sicily (active c.1652-82).
The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a similarly enamelled pendant catalogued as in the style of Giuseppe Bruno (accession no. 1285-1871) and another example can be found in the Royal Collection Trust (accession no. RCIN 441486).
