Circle of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato (Sassoferrato 1609 - Rome 1685)
Virgin at Prayer
Oil on canvas
48 x 40 cm.
Splendid frame 68 x 60 cm.
This splendid Virgin at Prayer, the work of a Roman painter active between the 17th and 18th centuries, is ascribable to the pictorial manner of Giovanni Battista Salvi, known as Sassoferrato. The subject draws inspiration from the happiest and most celebrated inventions of the great master from the Marche region, which his workshop took up in conspicuous numbers, inserting countless variations on the inclination of the head, the position of the hands and the cut of the frame.
Following the success of this Marian image, his entourage and the Maestro himself painted a considerable number of them; among the most famous are those in the Prado Museum and the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, in the Salute Church in Venice, in the Pinacoteca in Perugia and in the Museo Diocesano in Recanati.
Recognised as one of the most successful artists of the 17th century thanks to his extraordinary sense of harmony and colourism, Salvi met the public taste of the time with his painting, fully reflecting its aesthetic canons.
A pupil of Domenichino and refined interpreter of the Renaissance tradition, especially Raphael, Sassoferrato developed a style of extraordinary formal perfection, with precise drawing and refined Marian images.
His critical and collector's fortune can be seen in the countless autograph and workshop replicas, but also, as in our case, later executed by a painter from the Roman area active between the two centuries.
The painting is in good conservation condition: the paint surface is well preserved.
Complete with a magnificent antique carved and gilded wooden frame, which perfectly matches and enhances the beauty of the canvas.
