Full details at the following LINK

This pair of charming landscapes, executed with elegant rocaille taste and complete with the pleasant frames of the period, are conceived with the scenographic sensitivity of the most classic Veneto landscape tradition of the early 18th century.

The works, with their pleasing pictorial quality, show clear references to the pictorial styles of Marco Ricci (Belluno 1676 - Venice 1730), one of the most important protagonists of Veneto landscape painting.

The perspective setting, characterised by the succession of small hills that mark out the valley, against the backdrop of which the mountains can be seen, is also modulated by the harmonious sequence of light and shadow that mark the slope of the land towards the horizon. Among the innovations introduced by Marco Ricci in landscape painting, which we find in our beautiful pair of paintings, is in fact the experimentation of light in its possibilities of atmospheric rendering.

The works under examination share many details with many others by the master, such as the mountain ranges dissolving into the background, the trees placed in the foreground at the sides, as well as the small figures animating the scene, in addition to the compositional cut of the view that expands in depth in a modulated succession of perspective planes.

After a stay in England and Holland, and direct knowledge of Nordic painting - in particular the works of Pieter Mulier and Jacob de Heusch - Ricci moved towards a new experimentation in the rendering of atmospheric luminosity. This new landscape painting of his blended with the style in vogue in Venetian production, creating an unprecedented interpretation of landscape painting that was destined to enjoy extraordinary fortune, and which naturally inspired many painters close to him.
