Empire chariot clock “Allegory of Day and Night”

A refined and truly rare gilt bronze Empire chariot clock, exquisitely symbolizing the allegory of Day and Night. Atop the clock, Day is illustrated by Eros holding a torch, standing on a chariot drawn by two butterflies, which represent prosperity in friendship and marriage, moving gracefully through the clouds. The frieze beneath the clockwork illustrates Night, portrayed by a woman asleep on a sofa while Eros stands guard, protecting her from evil. The rounded sides of the clock are adorned with winged dragons, symbolizing the malevolent forces that may arise during the night. The lower section of the base features applied decorations of greyhounds and winged women, supported by four elegantly crafted feet.

The clockwork features a white enamel dial signed “à Paris,” with Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals marking every 15 minutes. It is equipped with a wire-suspended pendulum and anchor escapement, striking the hours and half-hours on a bell regulated by a count wheel. The mechanism is in perfect working order and is complete with the pendulum, bell, and key.

This captivating Empire mantel clock, adorned with intricate details, has been expertly crafted in finely chiselled mercury gilded bronze. It has been professionally cleaned and is in excellent condition.

Origin: Paris, circa 1810.

Dimensions: 47 cm (18.5?) high, 33 cm (13?) wide and 14 cm (5.5?) deep.
