Offered by Galerie Saint Martin
Large oil on canvas, signed Fouji and dated 1896.
The name “rose trémière” or “hollyhock rose” is an alteration of “rose d'Outremer”, attested as early as 1500. It is said to have been brought back from the East by crusaders in the Middle Ages, in the 13th century.
A common sight in gardens, it is depicted in numerous paintings.
The grandeur of its flowers and the beauty of its colors make it very attractive to painters.
Our artist's composition is perfectly balanced. Various cameos of roses and, in the center, a single white rose to captivate the viewer's gaze. All set against a golden background, making the canvas glow.
