THE LION OF LUCERNE
The base with carved inscription: "HELVETIORUM FIDEI AC VIRTUTI MDCCXCII."
On an oblong base with naturalistic rock carving, the reclining figure of a lion rests its head on two shields – one with a carved cross, the other with carved lilies, representing Switzerland and France, respectively.
Note:
The present sculpture is a reduced version of the Lion Monument located in the center of Lucerne, created as an allegory of the death of the Swiss Guards who fell during the storming of the Tuileries in Paris on August 10, 1792, and has been under Swiss monument protection since 2006. Of the 1000 guards stationed at the Tuileries Palace at that time, 760 perished during the storming of the empty royal palace.
The Lion Monument in Lucerne is one of Bertel Thorvaldsen's most famous works and was erected in honor of the brave Swiss Guards who were killed during the French Revolution. This fruitwood sculpture represents a reduced and detailed reproduction of this monument and demonstrates Thorvaldsen's ability to convey historical and emotional depth in his works.
