Phoebe - Eugène Marioton (1857 - 1933)

Mythological subjects were highly popular at the time; for instance, other representations and interpretations of Phoebe can be found in the works of other artists, such as Séraphin Denechau with his bronze also named after her. It is notable that in the majority of depictions of this Titaness, the symbol of the moon is omnipresent.

Phoebe or Phébé: "the brilliant one," is the Titaness "with the golden diadem," as Hesiod would say; the wife of Coeus, she retained her place in the heavens after the Titan rebellion. Phoebe was the Titaness of Light who was later associated with Selene, the goddess of the moon. She was also the Titaness of prophecies, notably the oracle of Delphi. She was the third goddess to have charge of it, after Gaia and Themis. Aeschylus, in the introduction to the Eumenides, has the Pythia herself declare that Phoebe controlled this oracle, which she handed over to Apollo as a birthday gift.

The French sculptor Eugène Marioton (Paris 1857 - 1933 Paris)

Eugène Marioton, born on April 7, 1857 in Paris, is a French sculptor who primarily works with bronze. His works adhere to the traditions of Neoclassicism, featuring small cast bronze sculptures of French historical leaders and figures from ancient Greece and Rome.

He regularly participates in the Société des Artistes Français and serves on the jury of the sculpture section of the salon in 1905. Before his death in 1933, Marioton receives several awards for his work, including a prize from the Société des Beaux-Arts and a young artist scholarship from the General Council of the Seine in 1884.
