Old Masters Paintings and Antique Furniture from the 16th to the 18th century
Venetian Louis XV centre table in walnut, walnut burl, cherry and poplar fillets in the interior parts, measuring 220 x 80 x 100 cm.
A typically Venetian table in view of the late Baroque-style decorativism expressed through this virtuosic carving apparatus that distinguishes this rare specimen with a beveled profile top and underlying band of two drawers finished with walnut-root files.
The precious taste of the ornamentation culminates in the redundant trophy placed at the intersection of the crosspieces that, in line with contemporary proposals by French court ornamentists, break up in the eagerness of the softly interwoven floral garlands linking the mighty historiated legs.
The incomparable lightness of the carving that resentfully contours the undercounter frame, piercing in intricate but always symmetrical vegetal diversions the fleshy volutes of the supports of this marvellous dining table is a shining example of the imagination and at the same time the artistic concreteness of the great Venetian workshops of carvers of the mid-18th century.
Elegantly balanced on supple upside-down S-shaped supports carved with a knee wrapped in full-bodied acanthus leaves, the lagoon cabinetry is conceived as a cipher of elegance visible from the careful shaping of the head of the frames that emphasise the animated succession of curves and counter-curves of which the top and the underlying band are made, veneered in walnut with briarwood mirrors skilfully stemmed by cherrywood fillets.
