Offered by La Crédence
Oil on canvas representing a pleasant moment in a park. A young officer of the 6th cuirassier regiment is amusing his child, sitting on his mother's lap, with his pair of gloves.
The scene probably takes place in autumn; the park is difficult to locate.
Signed lower right "GIRARDET", with a first name Eugène in front which seems to have been added at the time.
Although Eugène GIRARDET, known as an Orientalist, also painted genre scenes, it is more likely that it was his younger brother Jules, aged three, who was better known for this type of scene.
Born in 1856, he became a pupil of CABANEL at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He painted portraits, genre scenes and some orientalist subjects, but specialised in historical scenes. His works won awards at the Salon de Paris in 1881, and he was awarded a silver medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.
