Oil on canvas signed and dated by Joseph Perignon - 1845.
This portrait depicts Madame Daurand Forgues, wife of Paul-Émile Daurand-Forgues (1813-1883), also known by the pseudonyms Old Nick and Tim, a 19th-century French journalist, literary critic and writer.
Jospeh Perignon painted this portrait in the style of Ingres.
Alexis Joseph Pérignon began his career with his father (Alexis-Nicolas Pérignon 1783-1864) before joining the studio of the famous painter Antoine-Jean Gros, where he completed his apprenticeship.
His talent as a portraitist, working in the spirit of Ingres, was quickly recognized. He knew how to bring out the personality of his models, while adhering to the standards of classical portraiture. The Musée Ingres in Montauban (France) holds J. Pérignon's portrait of Doctor Double (1839).
