The ring of triangular section is engraved to the outside with two Lombardic Latin inscriptions, ’+AJAIJEDEVELTED A L G V T’ and ‘+ADRO SID ROS X D R O S’, the charm words inscribed would have provided protection against ailments such as intestinal pain, tooth ache, fever, spasms, the evil eye and other disorders or calamities. Charm rings could also aid in promoting potency, pregnancy and religious piety.
The inscriptions most closely relate to a ring of a similar date in the collection of the British Museum, London, Registration number, AF.1000:
