Pair Of 18th Century Louis XVI Period Candelabra With Putti

This exquisite pair of 18th century Louis XVI period (1774–1792) gilt and patinated bronze French candelabra features charming Bacchanalian putti, inspired by the renowned sculptor Claude Michel, known as Clodion. Each putto, adorned with vine-wreathed hair and a vine leaf loincloth, stands on a rocky base; one accompanied by an upturned vase, tambourine, and goatskin, the other by a goatskin and sack.

The putti gracefully support gilded, spiral-fluted cornucopias brimming with grapes and vine leaves, each culminating in a pearled nozzle. These enchanting figures rest upon fluted white marble pedestals, which are mounted on square white marble plinths. The plinths are further embellished with gilt bronze pearled rings and ribbon-tied laurel wreath bands.

Despite variations in detail, this pair resembles a set of candelabra circa 1780 by Louis Félix de Larue (see Ottomeyer and Pröschel).

Our pair of French Louis XVI period candelabra exemplifies exceptional craftsmanship, with finely chiseled details. The mercury gilding, patina, and marble are in an excellent state of preservation.

Origin: Paris, circa 1780.

Dimensions: 45 cm high, 23 cm wide, 15 cm deep. Size of the marble base: 15 x 15 cm.
