A Medieval silver and gold ring set with an intaglio.
English, 15th century.
Ring size S 1/2 UK / 9.25 US.
Weighs 4.6 grams.
The silver ring has an applied outer layer of gold which is engraved with flowers and the words, “en bon an” (twice) which translates as ‘a good year’. The silver sides of the band are decorated with engraved flowers. The flat bezel has a recessed centre that is set with a medieval mother of pearl intaglio depicting a male bust in profile. The mother of pearl has somewhat degraded within the soil and so the intaglio has become less defined.
The ring was found in Dorset, England in 2018 and has been recorded on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database:
