A pair of oval ivory reliefs.
One relief depicting the ascension of Mary.
Mary rises featherily from her tomb into the heavenly with a fluttering robe, surrounded by angels and putti. Her eyes turn expectantly heavenward.
On earth, the apostles look up in amazement at this miraculous Assumption.
The other relief depicts the resurrection and ascension of Christ with cross staff and banner, blessing with his hand. Soldiers are startled by this unimaginable. The resurrection of Christ is at the heart of the Christian faith. It depicts the eternal love of God, which is unstoppable and makes it through death. The banner symbolises victory over death.
These ivory slices are full and deeply carved and of high quality.
Germany, circa 1700.
