Son of a soldier, Henri Augustin Gambard was born on October 30, 1819, in Sceaux, south of Paris.
He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris on October 9, 1839, as a student of Signol. In 1843, he competed for the Prix de Rome for Oedipus Going into Exile from Thebes. He won the second Second Grand Prix after Eugène-Jean Damery and François-Léon Bénouville. He then exhibited from 1845 at the Paris Salon until 1859, without abandoning the provincial Salons such as Rouen, Le Havre or Dijon.
In 1850, the artist married Elisabeth Dutilleux, whose union produced a son named Ary (1852-1897) and who was himself a painter like his father.
Henri Gambard died on October 22, 1882, in Paris.
