Offered by Matthew Holder
A devotional gold posy ring engraved with black letter.
Probably English, 15th century.
Ring size Q UK / 8 US.
Weighs 5.2 grams.
The inscription is somewhat hard to decipher although it appears read ‘syes / iii ed / iii deo / est’, which probably translates as ‘Wed to Deo’ relating to the wearers relationship with God, alluding to their piety and devotion.
An almost identical example can be found in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (Accession number: M.65-1960), the inscription is also undeciphered.
Another similar example can be found in the collection of the British Museum, Registration number: AF.1088.
