A bronze group of Saint George on Horseback slaying the dragon and the Princess of Cappadocia.
North European, mid 15th century.
Measures 15 x 13 x 8cm.
The group is displayed on its original castellated base, the figure of Saint George mounted on horseback, a spear in hand and in the process of slaying the dragon beneath him. Princess Cappadocia is at his feet praying, the lamb of god sheltered under the belly of the horse. The rear legs of the horse have old repairs and the dragons tail is missing.
Similar although incomplete examples can be found in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston (Accession number; 56.1222a-b) and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, (Object number; BK-16919).
