Late 18th, early 19th century French furniture and objets d'art
Exceptional Empire period clock in patinated and gilt bronze. Model "aux Renommées". Signed twice by Thomire in Paris.
Very large (76 cm high x 61 cm wide), this clock features two winged renomées holding the clock movement at arm's length with garlands of flowers. They stand on square bases surmounted by a ball, the whole forming a large portico. These two bases are linked by a lotiform brace, embellished in the center by a basin supported by three graces.
The clockwork is crowned by a large palmette.
The clock movement, replaced in the mid-19th century, has a leaf suspension system, and is known as the "Brocot Movement" after the watchmaker who invented this system. The movement is complete and functional, but needs to be overhauled and adjusted; the balance wheel is present, but detached from its stem.
Bibliography: A table clock, also by Thomire, of a very similar model (see photo in the gallery) sold at Christie's in London in 2010 for £27500 "au marteau", i.e. around €45,000 today, taking into account selling costs, exchange rates and inflation.
