Emmanuel de la Villéon 1858-1944
settled in central Burgundy in the 1900s, in a region known as Puisaye.
He lived there intermittently, and painted 30% of his work there, as shown in our painting.
Puisaye is a region of forests and ponds in small, damp, green valleys, where the tree is king.
La Villéon's paintings symbolize this nature.
These luminous, pastel-toned works are an ode to the earth, source of life and nourishment.
Critics hail his landscapes: "He can render the graces of spring verdant and paint these rows of blossoming trees to marvelous effect, dazzling the eyes of our countryside".
Our painting, dated 1912, is more modern than many of his landscapes: in its construction, closer to Victor Cahrreton, and in its brushwork, closer to Louis Valtat.
