A pair of polished bronze candlesticks from the first part of the 17th century; the base consists of a hexagonal-section bell with six slightly tapering sides, each adorned with alternating full and half foliage, resting on a terrace with six interlocking boulle feet. A flat, angular intermediate cup decorated with six winged putti at each of the six corners, marks the periphery, encircling a deep circular groove. The shaft consists of a central ringed baluster supporting the tap, which is mounted on a ringed cylindrical pedestal. The shaft and spigot are decorated with chevrons and stylized foliage. Early 17th-century work from the Holy Roman Empire, Germany or Flanders. Dimensions height 25.5cm, width 15.6cm. Very good condition, with minor scratches on one of the shafts.
