André PERRACHON (1828 -1908)- Pink and yellow flowers

Signed lower left. With frame. Oil on canvas.

This painting by André Perrachon depicts a bouquet of roses delicately placed on a dark surface, typical of 19th-century still lifes. The composition highlights two main flowers, a yellow rose and a pink rose, surrounded by foliage and a few fallen petals, all bathed in subtle light that accentuates the velvety texture of the petals and the freshness of the leaves. The dark, almost mysterious background enhances the vibrancy of the floral colors and creates a striking contrast.

Perrachon, recognized as one of the masters of flower painting in Lyon, excels here in rendering the naturalness and delicacy of the roses, demonstrating his great technical mastery and keen sense of observation. This painting, through its sobriety and refinement, perfectly illustrates the art of still life and the artist’s ability to elevate the ephemeral beauty of flowers.

André Perrachon trained in painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, then in Paris in 1847 with François Lepage and Pierre-Adrien Chabal-Dessurgey, who was the director of the flower painting workshop of the Manufacture nationale des Gobelins.

A. Perrachon is known for his paintings of genre scenes, still lifes and especially flowers. He exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1850 where he obtained an honourable mention in 1859, then a second in 1863. He acquired his reputation by his ability to give flowers and roses a naturalness of unequalled perfection.

He was elected president of the Société Lyonnaise des Beaux-Arts when it was created in 1887.

He taught painting to Claudia Bret-Charbonnier, Thérèse Guérin, Marie Girard-Nauwelaers, Marie Hodieux-Belous and Mathilde Mitton as well as to his son Joseph Perrachon (1883-1969).
