Circular Relief Perseus rescuing Andromeda
Germany or Netherlands, probably 19th century
Repoussé and engraved silver
Diameter of the circular plaque: 17.3 cm
Length including handles: 21.8 cm
Presence of hallmarks
The scene depicts Perseus rescuing Andromeda, under the watchful eyes of the Nereids and Poseidon. The style is inspired by Dutch plaquettes, and silver works from the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly through the mannerist anatomical canon of the figures and the density of the landscape elements.
The silver plaque has been patiently embossed and then engraved. Handles and feet were then soldered on to make it a centerpiece or a ring holder.
