Portrait of a Knight in Armour
Oil on canvas
81 x 70 cm./ Framed 93 x 82
A handsome gentleman in armour, immortalised in an authoritative and proud stance, is the subject of our fine portrait, of good quality and painted by an artist belonging to northern Italian culture, presumably Lombardy, in the mid 17th century.
Although his role as a knight is emphasised, his pose is regal, portrayed three-quarter-length, surmounted by a plumed helmet, while holding the typical field marshal's staff, the ceremonial symbol par excellence of command, worn as part of the uniform by soldiers with the highest rank in the hierarchy.
The pictorial quality of the painting is not without Spanish influence, understandable given that for much of the 16th and 17th centuries the Lombardy area was ruled by the Spanish government.
