Biography :
Georges GARDET (1863-1939)
Son of a sculptor and brother of sculptor Joseph-Antoine Gardet (1861-1891), Georges Gardet entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied with Aimé Millet and Emmanuel Frémiet.
He soon showed great skill in the creation of animal subjects, which would remain his favorite themes.
Georges Gardet took part in the Paris Salon from the age of twenty, winning first prize in 1891 with "Drame au désert". He received numerous commissions from wealthy clients for "portraits" of their pets or to decorate their gardens and homes. He produced plaster casts, often translated into bronze, as well as marbles. Some of his works were published in cookie at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres.
Georges Gardet became an Officer of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900. A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Société des Artistes Français, he is considered one of the greatest artists of the French school of animal sculptors.
His pupils included Jane le Soudier and Louis-Albert Carvin.
