Portrait of a Spanish woman
Oil on oval canvas
H. 95 cm ; L. 75 cm
Signed and dated lower right - 1920
Trained at the Brussels Academy, Philippe Swyncop devoted virtually his entire career to portraiture. With his thick, colorful brushstrokes, he creates effigies with a certain material that catches the light and adds life. His favorite subject is the Spanish woman. From the simple, simply dressed gypsy to the elegant, black-clad Andalusian dancer.
Our portrait, with its rare contrast between dress and background, depicts a Spanish woman, dressed in a very dark blue, her light sleeves flecked with red, standing out against the large shawl worn around her waist. The cross, worn like a talisman on her chest, clearly marks the Spanish woman's faith, like a caricature of the type. Her warm complexion, her almost burnt hands resting on a flowery skirt, make us breathe in the dry air of the peninsula.
