The painting we are presenting is a moving reflection of second-half eighteenth-century painting in the genre of genre scenes, which were very popular throughout the eighteenth century. The painting's touching intimacy, delicate pictorial touch and attention to detail make it a work of quality. A chiaroscuro treatment is noted in this composition.
The central portrait may echo that of the Marquise de Pompadour, painted by Boucher in 1756.
