Coastal View At Sunset, Atelier of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix De Marseille

Coastal view at sunset with fishermen and boats
Atelier of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, called de Marseille (Marseille 1700 - Berlin 1782)

Oil on canvas
50 x 62 cm. - in frame 64 x 80 cm.

The proposed work, depicting a splendid coastal view rendered brilliant by the warm light of sunset, presents the distinctive features typical of the compositions of Charles François Grenier De Lacroix, one of the most important landscape painters in 18th century European painting and a specialist in depicting seascapes, and can therefore be attributed to one of the many pupils and collaborators active in his atelier.

Versions very similar to our composition can be found in the most important international museums and private collections, belonging to a large series of paintings that the master produced, together with his collaborators, especially during his stay in Italy.

?After his apprenticeship with Vernet in France, De Lacroix collaborated with the master for several years in Rome, where he is documented until 1760 and was certainly later in Naples until 1776.

His marinas were very fashionable at the time, a favourite genre of the nobility from Great Britain and Northern Europe who came to Italy on the Grand Tour and were sold as souvenirs of the trip.

Often, therefore, they were not commissioned as simple decorative elements, but were meant to represent a gallery of images of the most significant places or views seen during their long stays.

The glimpse immortalised, although a figment of the author's imagination, is inspired by the picturesque Mediterranean coastline with a harbour, animated by small, lively figures of fishermen with their moored boats. The clear sunlight, the rosy clouds and the calm surface of the sea contribute to the harmonious and idyllic atmosphere of the work.

The painting is in good condition with a beautiful carved and gilded wooden frame.
