The hunt - Louis-Ernest BARRIAS Ferdinand BARBEDIENNE

Louis- Ernest BARRIAS "The hunt".
Imposing bronze sculpture with brown patina, 98 cm high.
Signature "E. Barrias" on the rock; "F. Barbedienne fondeur Paris" and mechanical reduction stamp "Collas" on the base.

This magnificent sculpture was created by Barrias in 1889 for the Prefect's dining room at the Paris City Hall and published by Maison Barbedienne.

Louis-Ernest BARRIAS was born in Paris in 1841 in a modest background, son of a porcelain painter and younger brother of the painter Felix-Joseph Barrias. He began his artistic studies by studying painting with Léon Cogniet before quickly moving towards sculpture. It was in Jules Cavelier's workshop that he learned to know and love materials and acquired the skills of the trade, the cutting of stone and marble, the chasing and engraving of bronze.

When in 1858 he entered the Paris School of Fine Arts under the direction of the sculptor François Jouffroy, he had already acquired skill and experience superior to many of his comrades.
In 1861 he won the Second Grand Prix de Rome, with his bas-relief "Chryséia returned to her father by Ulysses" and the same year, he exhibited two busts at the Salon. Barrias then began to build a reputation as a portrait painter.
The young man completed his decorative studies with Mathurin Moreau, he carried out some work at the Paris Opera as well as the statues of Virgil and Spring (1865) in the Hôtel de Païva.
In 1865 he received the Grand Prix de Rome for his bas-Relief “Foundation of Marseille — Glypfis, son of a Gallic chief, chose Photis as his husband, Phocaean ambassador. »
Barrias then leaves for Italy, travels and perfects his education, while making his regulatory shipments, a Round of Fauns and Bacchantes and a bust of a Young Roman.
In 1884 Barrias replaced Auguste Dumont at the Institut de France, then took over from his master Cavelier as professor at the École des Beaux-Arts, until his death in 1905.

Throughout his career Barrias received numerous public (Poitiers Town Hall, Paris Opera, Palais du Louvre, Paris Town Hall, the Sorbonne, The Paris Natural History Museum, etc.) and private commissions. Most of his work is visible in public places in Paris, at the Musée d'Orsay, Père-Lachaise cemetery and Montmartre.
