This fine 19th. century bust depicts Diana - the Roman goddess of light and protector of all life. She was identified with the Greek Artemis - the goddess of hunting, the ruler of forests and wild animals, as well as the goddess of the moon. Diana's (Artemis) attributes were a bow and arrows. Diana was often depicted with a crescent moon on her forehead. The bust of the goddess is one of several versions of Diana's image, which were created according to a sculpture made at the end of the 18th century by Jean-Antoine Houdon, a French sculptor who was one of the most outstanding artists at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries.
