Johann König was a German painter and follower of Adam Elsheimer. He is mainly known for his painted copper panels. This piece, characterized by the delicate strokes of his hand, depicts the adoration. In this composition the angels serve as messengers of heavenly grace, carrying the symbolic tools of the PAssion of Christ. The somber yet profoundly meaningful imagery of the instruments, including the crown of thorns, serves as a reminder of Christ’s sacrifice for humanity.
Due to König’s skillful use of light and shadow, a divine radiance seems to emanate from the Christ child. The delicate features and gentle expressions of those around Him, exude an aura of serenity and devotion.
Königs works are displayed in the Louvre, the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, the art gallery in Berlin and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
