Gillis Mostaert the Elder (27 or 28 November 1528 – 28 December 1598) was a Flemish Renaissance painter and draughtsman active in Antwerp in the second half of the 16th century. He was a versatile artist who worked in various genres including landscape, genre and history painting. Gillis Mostaert was known in particular for his winter landscapes and his scenes with fires and nocturnal scenes and his works in this genre were among the most sought after pieces of his time. He was a regular collaborator with leading Antwerp artists of his time.
The oil on panel measures ca. 35,7 cms by 44,5 cms and with its frame ca. 43,7 by 52,5 cms.
The attribution has been made by Cabinet Turquin.
