Offered by Seghers & Pang Fine Arts
Rare Anglo-Saxon bronze trefoil brooch with an eagle’s head in each lobe and a dot-in-circle motif in the centre. Goldenbrown patination. Excellent condition: complete with pin! It has resemblance to Hattat 1317 (a quatrefoil eagle’s head brooch). A rare and very interesting brooch. Dimensions: 40 x 40 mm.
Provenance:
Bernard C. Pickard collection (UK) acquired in the 1970s. Bernard Pickard was a close friend of Richard Hattat, the authority and author of several books on ancient brooches. Hattat acknowledges in his first book ‘Ancient & Romano-British Brooches’ (1982) that Mr. Pickard first aroused his interest in brooches and inspired him in writing his books during his retirement.
The brooch is accompanied by a hand signed letter from Bernard C. Pickard (July, 2007) describing this brooch.
