Philipp Wouvermans or Wouverman (1619-1668) was a Haarlem painter who was highly regarded in his day, even at the court of Louis XIV. His works enriched many princely collections in Europe. He is best known for his genre scenes, including military assaults, encampments and halt-overs, such as this painting, which was obviously painted by one of his followers in the 18th century, attesting to his long-standing reputation as a painter.
