Limestone pieta, Toulouse school of the 16th century
Beautiful Virgin of Mercy in limestone.
The skilful work of drapery, still showing Gothic references, and the physiognomy of the Virgin can be compared to the Toulouse school, and indicate a work of the end of the Renaissance, at the latest the middle of the 16th century because the theme of the Pieta subsequently fell into disuse.
Visible accidents and losses. Probable victim of iconoclasm, resulting in particular in the destruction of the head of Christ, the sculpture was subsequently restored, but the restorations are missing, as is unfortunately often the case.
The back is partly carved.
