Discreet but devoted brother of the Cardinal Minister, Alphonse du Plessis de Richelieu (1582 - 1653) was Archbishop of Aix-en-Provence then Primate of Gaul.
Grand chaplain of France, rector of the Sorbonne, founder of the Bernardine convent, envoy extraordinary to the Pope, he had a rich life. He is represented here wearing the cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit, a prestigious order if ever there was one, of which he was commander.
Incidentally, he was also the owner of a house in the fields, north of Lyon, in which is located today ... the Galerie du Jardin des Moines.
This oil on canvas, in a wooden frame, is a 17th century French School, follower of Philippe de Champaigne.
