Louis XV-style flat desk in Espagnolettes marquetry, based on a model by Charles Cressent, on permanent display at the Château de Versailles.
It probably appeared in Louis XV's interior apartment at Versailles in 1744. It was also used in the Tuileries and Compiègne in the 19th century. It was on this desk that the peace treaty ending the First World War was signed on June 28, 1919, in the center of the Galerie des Glaces.
The desk presented here has the same curves, bronzes and dimensions as the one made by Charles Cressent in the 18th century.
Note the fine chasing of the bronzes and the original gilding. Oak drawer bottoms with rosewood and violet wood marquetry, enhanced by elegant brass fillet marquetry.
