Lombard painter of the 17th century
Portrait of a Man in Armour

Oil on canvas
81 x 71 cm. - In frame 94 x 82 cm.

A handsome gentleman in armour, immortalised in an authoritative and proud stance, is the subject of our fine portrait, of excellent quality and painted by a painter belonging to the Lombard culture of the 17th century

Although his role as a knight is emphasised, the pose is one befitting a young aristocrat, portrayed with his body in front but his face in three-quarter view, surmounted by a plumed helmet and wrapped in a cloak of deep red, elegantly draped, which seems to frame his figure, while at the same time recreating the sense of movement that enlivens the composition.

The young man does not hesitate to draw the spectator's attention by fixing his enquiring gaze on him, with the precise intention of establishing direct contact. The physiognomic features of the face, especially in the shape of the slightly aquiline nose, suggest the possibility that it is a portrait from life, and certainly a young man of the upper classes.

The very intense lighting and strong chiaroscuro used in this painting serve to emphasise the direct expression of the sitter as well as his pose.
