Oil on wood panel.
The figure portrayed here, probably a wealthy Dutch merchant, is unknown to us. The sobriety, even austerity, of his costume leaves little doubt that he belonged to the large Reformed community of the United Provinces. The short burr and broad felt hat, in vogue in the late 1580s and the following decade, allow a fairly precise dating. Our painting can be compared with other works by Cornelis Ketel from the same period: the Portrait of a 58-Year-Old Man in the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum and the Portrait of Dirck Barendsz in the Amsterdam Museum.
We have chosen to present this portrait in an elegant 17th-century Dutch walnut burr veneer reverse-profile frame.
