Rare pair of watercolors signed Olivier le May (Louveciennes 1734 - Paris 1797).
A friend of Watteau, le May was an outstanding 18th-century French artist.
He first drew inspiration from Watteau, then became acquainted with 17th-century Dutch masters such as Nicolas Berchem and Karel Dujardin, from whom he also drew inspiration.
The artist then traveled, eventually leaving Bordeaux for Saint-Domingue in 1787.
Our watercolors, both signed in different ways, date from this last period of his life.
Note the fine detail and perfect conservation of this pair of works.
