Offered by La Crédence
Oil on canvas portraying a young woman of great beauty, with a Greek profile, leaning against a balcony.
The lines and quality of execution are perfect, giving an impression of purity inherited from the teachings of Ingres.
Abandon, contemplation, melancholy, escape and ravishment in a dream. The canvas is dated 1839, at the height of the Romantic period. The lighting in the background is almost unreal.
Attribution to Claude Marie DUBUFE ( 1790-1864) is almost certain.
Consul in 1809, he was nevertheless destined to become a painter, under the expert eye of David.
He left for Italy in 1811, and began a long and brilliant career as a portraitist of the nobility and haute bourgeoisie, specializing in female heads.
He was the father of the equally famous Edouard-Louis.
