André MERIEL BUSSY (1902-1984)
was a French painter and engraver from a family of artists (painter, opera singer...).
He began his studies in 1919 at the Beaux-arts de Rennes, then moved to Paris in 1924 to study with Lucien Simon.
A prolific painter who varied subjects, techniques and media, he was in turn a wartime painter, portraitist, decorator and fresco artist, and was awarded several prizes during his career: the Prix Chenavard in 1926 and the gold medal of the Société des Artistes Français at the 1939 Salon.
From the 1920s onwards in France, new thinking began to emerge around sacred art, involving many great artists (such as Maurice Denis, Le Corbusier and Soulages). Part of his art is devoted to mural frescoes for the reinvention of faith.
The artist also enjoys painting Brittany, where he bought a house with his wife.
He also takes the opportunity to portray his family in touching and joyful scenes, like our painting.
