Homer recounts in the Odyssey a banquet scene given by Alcinous, king of the Phoenicians, in the presence of his wife, his daughter Nausicaa and Ulysses. The latter had been collected after its sinking near the island. Alcinous, after having ordered the construction of a new boat organizes a feast in honor of his guest.
Isaac Moillon decides to depict this scene when he imagines a hanging telling the story of Ulysses.
Isaac Moillon (1614-1673), painter to the king and brother of the famous still-life painter Louise Moillon, made many boxes for tapestries that were woven in Aubusson. The rest of Ulysses' story is one of his most famous creations. She fell into the trade many times. The Aubusson Museum has a series of them.
