Martin is a special saint in the Christian Church.
Founder of the first monasteries in the West, evangelizing bishop, he is considered the first saint of this new era of the Empire that became Christian.
The son of a Roman officer, he enlisted at an early age with the intention of pursuing a military career, and one day saw a poor man shivering. Shocked by the scene, he took his sword and cut off his coat, giving part of it to the poor man.
He was later baptized and left the army.
In 360, he founded the first monastery in Gaul at Ligugé, and later became bishop of Tours.
The cult of Saint-Martin developed soon after his death.
Artists of all eras will continue to depict the scene.
