Vase, Phenomen Genre 1/78 decoration, Johann Loetz Witwe, ca. 1901
The vase pictured here, with its striking yet delicate form encased in remarkable "PG 1/78" decoration, represents a true Jugendstil beauty. The execution of such an elongated form, with its distinctive thin neck as well as the applied, extended drop overlays, requires the highest level of craftsmanship.
In this decoration, the metallic silver-yellow threads are combed onto a Candia or Hyazinth background. Other color compositions of related decorations — such as "Gre 1/4", "Gre 1/18" or "Gre 1/64"— were also extremely sought-after but were by no means as rarely produced as the variant on this piece. The dark blue background of the drop contrasts beautifully with the orange shade of the vase body, and the metallic shimmer of the combed threads form a unifying element for the entire decoration.
