Reliquary Bust Of A Holy Roman Soldier - 17th Century

They are numerous, these Roman soldiers converted to Christianity. Whether they entered the legion out of passion, obligation or the search for glory, all of them came out with the only weapon... Faith.
St Donat, St Flavien, St Expedit, St Martin de Tours, Saint Longin, Saint Hippolyte are magnificent examples.

Here, in this important reliquary, without the particular attributes that traditionally characterize each Saint, and without a particular position, it is difficult to identify the character who is honored.
Our drawn-faced man is very expressive. This massive reliquary bust is in carved, polychromed and gilded wood.
It is of beautiful dimensions with its 80 cm high by 53 wide and 42 deep.
At its base a seal closes off the small reliquary niche. This red wax seal bears the arms of a cardinal presenting a prancing horse wearing three stars.

It is an Italian work from the 17th century.
Note small accidents, splits and gilding recovery.
