French 17th & 18th centuries furniture and Arts
We present a Japanese print depicting courtesans by the Japanese painter Kitagawa Utamaro born around 1753 and died on October 31, 1806, a specialist of the ukiyo-e movement.
He is particularly known for his depictions of beautiful women, but his work also includes many nature and animal scenes, as well as erotic albums.
His work reached the West in the 19th century where it met with great success. He particularly influenced the Impressionists with his bold framing and the graphic design of his prints.
In 1891, Edmond de Goncourt called him "the painter of green houses" (brothels), even if only one third of the numerous prints we know of him were actually dedicated to the Yoshiwara.
